Recently, Oromedia of Korea has published and released good English Go book which the quality already outweight the Kiseido’s or Nihon Kiin.

One of the remarkble book to introduce is the “Think like a Pro: Haengma” and “The Master  of Haengma“.

Haengma; is a korean term broadly could mean “best move next” usually refer to the jump (knight’s move, 2 spaces and etc.)

Anyway, Xinwen highly recommend go players to get these 2 books, it shows how one should play Haengma, and The Master of Haengma is a new book just published this year, 2009! and it gives more exercise for readers.

Haengma Problem 1
Haengma Problem 1

———————————————-

One of the problem in the book, page 11. It is an opening position, White should focus on the lower right corner. The next move for White is important, where should white play, considering the black’s stable influence on the lower left corner?

———————————————-
*Correct Answer*

Diagonal Move
Diagonal Move

———————————————-

White’s diagonal move at 1 is key point on the board. Black 2 and White 3 is common follow up. If Black plays at 3, white destroys black’s shape by playing at A.

After the approach move at 1, White loses the control of the game, because of the sequence from Black 2 to 18.

During the night, Xinwen went to Hock Doong’s house for their first 五番碁 match. The game went quite decent for Xinwen until the Yose where Xinwen kept making small moves which he should had played at “a”, “b” or “c” to ensure his winning.

The result was 0.5 close win for Xinwen.

(Black) Philip - (White) Xinwen
(Black) Philip - (White) Xinwen

———————————————-

After the first match of 五番碁, the winner will take White with komi 0.5 only. Thus Philip was Black in the second game of 五番碁 .

Lately, Xinwen had noticed the revival of Go-Seigen’s signature fusekiShin Fuseki“, notable in the diagram of 1, 3 and 5. Xinwen didn’t do quite well and resigned in the end.
