Recently, Oromedia of Korea has published and released good English Go book which the quality already outweight the Kiseido’s or Nihon Kiin.

One of the remarkble book to introduce is the “Think like a Pro: Haengma” and “The Master  of Haengma“.

Haengma; is a korean term broadly could mean “best move next” usually refer to the jump (knight’s move, 2 spaces and etc.)

Anyway, Xinwen highly recommend go players to get these 2 books, it shows how one should play Haengma, and The Master of Haengma is a new book just published this year, 2009! and it gives more exercise for readers.

During the night, Xinwen went to Hock Doong’s house for their first 五番碁 match. The game went quite decent for Xinwen until the Yose where Xinwen kept making small moves which he should had played at “a”, “b” or “c” to ensure his winning.

The result was 0.5 close win for Xinwen.

Lately, Xinwen had noticed the revival of Go-Seigen’s signature fuseki “Shin Fuseki“, notable in the diagram of 1, 3 and 5. Xinwen didn’t do quite well and resigned in the end.

All the representatives were guided and toured around the Jeonju City, and the first stop was the Traditional Culture Center. All were expected to have professional baduk player playing with them simultaneously and the 14th GS Caltex Cup Pro Baduk Championship was held also at the same time in a small room, and opened to allow photoshooting at the start of 15 minutes.

Xinwen somehow believed that whenever he got good scores for the first day, he would start facing downfall of losing streak the second day, reason? probably “jinx”.

Xinwen met Wuqi XU from New Zealand in the 4th round, this was also the second time Xinwen happened to play against New Zealand. Mr. Wu used mini chinese fuseki, and Xinwen had happened to play the joseki of Mini Chinese wrongly, resulting a extremely tough game for Xinwen to continue.

Thus, lost by resignation.

For the 5th round, Xinwen played against Hungary representative, Gyorgy CSIZMADIA. Xinwen started again with a bad start.

Supertjc had reviewed that the exchange of 1 -4 were bad, basically because of the thickness black happened to have. Later, Xinwen bad habit had ON when Black played atari move at triangle mark. Instead of just covering up at b, Xinwen went to capture the stone at a.

The game went on until Xinwen resigned when knowing that he didn’t have enough points.

In the afternoon, for the 6th round, Xinwen finally gotten black and hoping to play a stable fuseki which he did quite achieved in this game. The opponent is Andrius PETRAUSKAS from Lithuania.

Joseki to reply the white’s 19 was wrong, should have played at 23 first, said Jia Cheng. and lastly the losing of fuseki was the Black’s move 30, should’ve hane at “a”.

Eventually lost.

The last round, Xinwen played against Brazi, Felip Herman van RIEMSDIJKl. To Xinwen, he had to win this game no matter what it took. and which he did, making the game a big battle in middle and killed the group A connected to B.

Thus, 3 wins, same as past 2 years… pretty disappointing.

Instead of 王汝南 (wang ru nan), Xinwen happened to meet 张文东, who’s another famous professional player 9-dan back in 1980s, in Korea. Mr. Zhang then told Xinwen about the Go event that is going to be held in Asian Games 2010, and hoping to invite Brunei to join as well, sending bout 10 players.

Reaching to the venue, there were children playing go using different colour stones, some of the representative players had already there playing with other kid, and there were other event going on at the same time such as:

the second round started bout 15-20 mins after the first round. Surprisingly Xinwen got to play with Italian player, which he had faced for the past 2 years (different players, 2nd KPMC and 3rd KPMC).

The fuseki went quite badly for Xinwen, very tough game until White tenuki-ed Black move at “3″ then went for “4″ instead, xinwen got the chance and hit “5″ to decide the game, and eventually after long reading, Xinwen found the killing move-answer at “A”.

Thus, won by resignation.

Funny encounter meeting Indian player for the first time. Xinwen had tried to play seriously with him and happened to overplay the move at “1″ area but got to kill the group of White forcing the opponent to resign.

India as part of the Asian Go Federation’s members, Xinwen tried to get to know Rahul and to share some knowledge of the Go stories in India.

The 4th Korea Prime Minister Cup was held in Jeonju city, South Korea from the 23rd to 27th October, 2009. Brunei had sent Xinwen as the representative player, Jayden SIA Yen Chuan as the instructor and Sharen TAY Wei Wei as official.

It was also a great relief to meet other brothers and sisters from Philippines, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. It gave a sense of belonging and warm-hearted family gathering. Despite we might be fighting each other the during the tournament.

The first 五番碁 match of Philip against Xinwen was played on the 17th october, 2009. The game went quite tough for White, until Xinwen got to play the KO on the diagram shown, which narrow the gap of the game points. Eventually Philip made a very careless mistake resulting losing the game.

According to the rules from the MWA forum, the second game for any of the 五番碁 will be called Jo-sen, whereas the loser of the first round will take Black while the White has no Komi given.

Xinwen had black this time, and Alex is White. Not being serious the game went quite well in Fuseki for Xinwen but losing behind in Yose, shown in the diagram and when white played "7" invasion, the deciding move.

Malaysia Weiqi Association has decided to host this informal Competition, the “五番碁“. The title “五番碁” is originally derived from the traditional contest from Edo Period of Japan, 十番碁 (Jubango)¹´². Due to the time constraint and attendancy of the participants, Malaysia Weiqi Association had decided to just make it 五番碁.

Detail of the 五番碁 (gobango), can be found in the here(Forum of Malaysia Weiqi Association).

Thus, the first match of the event began on the 10th of October, 2009 in Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur.

The first 五番碁 match of Xinwen started playing against Alex Chan (kgs: veilchen). Xinwen had always acknowledged the strength and skills of Alex Chan and thus, Xinwen had decided to play with his top form with Tornament mode on, as well as treating the game as if he was playing in the upcoming International Tournament, Korea Prime Minister Cup.

The critical mistake done by Xinwen losing the game was playing at the move “15″ instead of “A” then, later another Yose judgment mistake making the game even closer to just half-point.

Due to H1N1 outspread in South Korea, the proposed Asian Amateur Baduk Championship 2009 which was supposedly held from September 18th to 23th was postponed to further date, November 27th – December 1st. Despite the changes, the players of Brunei Igo Society had additional 10 weeks to brush up the skills.

SUNG Hui Yee, one of the strongest female player in Brunei of 6-kyu will be having her one-on-one duel with TAN Chiaw Yee, who’s one of the best female player, on Sunday (27th September, 2009). Selection to represent Brunei in the Single Female Category.

The first round was began at 14 30, In conjunction with this selection, everyone in Brunei is well anticpated to know the strongest female. The game was live-broadcast in Brunei Room for kibitz.

The game went quite even from the starting, until a liberty race on the right side, however, despite of that, the game was considerably playable until the “obvious mistake” at the diagram shown. it was possibly the only opportunity for white to win.

Thus, Chiaw Yee got a leading win.

15 minutes break were given before the second match started. While reviewing and chatting to make themselves feel ease from pressure.

With great ashamed of herself, Hui Yee obviously started with her best ¹ Orthodox Fuseki (平行布局) out. Chiaw Yee who was not familiar with it had gotten the result badly. With the thickness, Hui Yee got an advantage in influence and attacking the center game.

Hui Yee, in the end, killed 3 groups of White, an extreme case of ownage.

The Final deciding match will be announced soon.
